The Bagua Map

How to use the Bagua Map to arrange your space

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging space to be in harmony with outdoor nature. The flow of the chi (energy) moves through our land, our homes and our personal belongings. Chi is everything. When this energy is off-course, we can feel unbalanced in our lives. This is when we look to the Bagua.

So, What is A Bagua?

(pronounced bog-wa)?

A Bagua is an invisible map that is virtually superimposed to layout over any floor plan. This includes homes, businesses, cabins, and even individual rooms (such as offices or bedrooms). When this map is placed over a floor plan, it provides a blueprint for nine different areas in our lives. Each area is called a Gua (pronounced gwa). Within these Gua’s, we can make specific enhancements to activate the Chi. Some examples would be fresh flowers, plants, mirrors, rugs, crystals and much more!

The form of Feng Shui I practice is called Black Sect, also known as, Western Feng Shui.

In this type of Feng Shui, the front door will always either be in the Knowledge, Career or Helpful People areas of the Bagua Map.

In the Bagua Map, each of the nine Gua’s carries a specific element, season, color, etc.

In the floor plan below, we can see that the front door is in the Career Gua. In the Career Gua, water is the dominant element, winter is the season and black is the main color. To achieve Chi, the Living Room should match these themes and be decorated with items of achievement or career success, artwork containing water (sea, rivers, lakes) and dark, deep color tones.

While not every room will perfectly fit into a Gua, there’s opportunity for that Gua to still be useful in your home. In the plan below, notice how the Wealth Gua is on the outside of the home. You can still give this space recognition by placing (or even burying) a symbol of prosperity and wealth.
